Clinical studies exposes more than subtle differences between sucrose and HFCS

With growing concern that excessive levels of fructose may pose a great health risk - causing high blood pressure, kidney disease and diabetes - researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, along with their colleagues at the University of Florida, set out to see if two common sweeteners in western diets differ in their effects on the body in the first few hours after ingestion. The study, recently published in the journal Metabolism, took a closer look at high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and table sugar (sucrose) and was led by Dr MyPhuong Le (University of Colorado) and Dr Julie Johnson (University of Florida).

Woman, two children killed in sugar factory blast

Berhampur (Odisha), Jan 23 (PTI) A woman and two children were killed when a storage tank exploded at a cooperative sugar mill at Aska in Odisha\'s Ganjam district, police said today. In the explosion last night at the Aska Cooperative Sugar Industries Ltd, three people were killed when thick spillage from the 2,000 tonne capacity molasses tank gushed into their nearby staff quarters. Besides the woman, her ten year-old grandson and an eight year-old boy were killed. Molasses, a left-over of the sugar industry, is the main raw material for preparing rectified spirit and is in high demand for manufacturing country liquor. Angry locals protested and blocked the road following which traffic movement on Aska-Bhubaneswar and Aska-Dasapalla roads was disrupted. The mill, one of the oldest cooperative sugar mills in the state, was closed by the authorities for the day. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is campaigning at Aska, Buguda and his assembly constituency Hinjili for the ensuing panchayat elections in the state, cancelled his visit in view of tension in the area following the incident. Ganjam district collector Kishan Kumar said the Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of the victims. PTI COR SKN KK HMI
